This book is a solid guide to understanding what it takes to get a job in information security.If you’re a recent grad looking to get into the field, or a veteran of another industry, you’ll learn the history, the lingo, and the mindset you need to break into information security.The author breaks down that you don’t even have to be technical to get a job in information security - strong analytical skills and an appreciation of process are more valuable than being a programmer or having a network engineering background.It was an enjoyable and informative read.
If you are interested in infosec you owe it to yourself to get this book. If you aren't sure if its for you this is the cheapest way to find out. If you are just starting out the book is filled with lessons learned from experience and strategies for progressing in the field with contemporary knowledge of someone in the field. The author also runs a podcast about infosec where he interviews all sorts of people in the field. Author knows what he's talking about. Give it a shot.
Easy to read and follow, especially for someone new in the field.
If you're trying to advise a young person who's fascinated by hacking but doesn't know where to start, and you don't know enough about security to get them started without getting them arrested, this book is the coach you're looking for.Not every kid is someone you can toss a book on shell scripting and say, "Ummm, this? Be sure to Google 'how to avoid getting arrested' before you try any of the exercises. I suppose you might need to drop a few hundred dollars on a spare computer or something? Your ISP might shut you down? I don't really know. Good luck figuring it out!"That's particularly true when mentoring someone from a non-traditional background who may have impostor syndrome if they dive straight into pen testing Reddit forums, someone who isn't used to having a coding-oriented group of older friends to learn from, someone whose ethnicity might lead to them being judged as malicious if they actually just made a mistake, etc.This book tells its readers WHY people will throw words like "TCP/IP" at them as "something you need to get good at." It gives readers an idea of "how good at" such things they need to be for various jobs in security.This book does the soft-skills "learn how to learn" and "what kind of person you need to be" and "what kinds of jobs there are in this field" advice very well -- although so does the author's podcast. (Also promising, by another author, although I haven't yet bought it: "Secure the InfoSec Bag: Six Figure Career Guide for Women in Security.)If a young person only had the podcast, they might feel like they'll never get "really" get started "learning to be a hacker."What's special about this book is the way it interweaves that "soft skill" advice with hard-skill advice like "learn TCP/IP."This book is an indispensable resource for anyone in an advising situation who doesn't know enough about security to provide coaching.
