Certainly not a book I would recommend to folks that take the Pentateuch seriously, because they would consider this classic of humor to be a work of blasphemy and condemned as a work of Satan. But for those of a more liberal mind, this is one funny book. I remember Mark Twain once wrote a spoof on the bible, but this book is far superior in my humble opinion. Steve Ebling has written a masterpiece of humor here, and I hope this isn't the last we've heard from this guy. I would like to tell Steve people like me are starved for more, because this man has talent and originality in spades. As far as I know, this is his first and only book, but I'll be continuously checking if he or when I can buy his next book. Steve must be a riot and I'd love to share a beer with his guy. Kudo's to his friend, Julia Bristow, that spent time to edit this book, and made it possible for publication. Steve Ebling fans owe her a debt of gratitude. Thomas Dalton
This is the second Steve Ebling book I have read. (I gave his first book four stars for editing.) Ebling's latest book shows his writing is maturing. But make no mistake: he has not lost his humor or irreverence. His retelling of the bible is laugh-out-loud funny. The author points out the inconsistencies and the obvious mutliple sources that comprise this collection of myths. Ebling calls attention to the plagiarism that forms the bible's best-known stories. Some examples: the word for "god" (elohim) in the old testament is actually PLURAL; bye-bye monotheism!. Cain and Abel are not mentioned in "Man" & Eve's family tree. The great flood story was told before the bible copied it; and much more. Ebling's language is sometimes course, but the book is an in-your-face examination of a supposedly "infallible" book.Ebling's work is guaranteed to antagonize the "true believer" and make the thinking person chuckle. If you interpret the bible literally, this probably isn't the book for you, unless you have a sense of humor. If you want to read a book that elucidates the absurd, inconsistent mythology in the bible, enjoy the written word of "gods."
I was surprised at how funny this book is. I went to catholic schools from pre-k to the end of high school; so I will vouch for its surprisingly educated status on the stories contained. They are all nonsense, they all contradict, and Yahweh will promise Abram the same thing 5 times. The seller is that it's funny without actually altering the original stories. Ebling finds a way to make incredible punchlines and ramblings out of nonsense stories collected over hundreds of years. It's a really fun ride. My only critique is that there are a few super racist jokes that caught me off guard, but I don't think it degrades the entire package. I'd highly recommend if you'd like to try out the bible without social pressure to like it; you'll honestly be more educated than most who claim themselves "religious".
I managed to get more educated about the bible without having to read all the thees and thous. It made me despise religion and the psycho-god even more than I already did. Isn't it funny how in this book the god was always talking to people, but today he only talks to psychopaths....mostly telling them to kill someone? Yep, back then, when the earth was flat the magnificent creator mostly told people to kill others, their children, the wretched monsters who dared gather wood on the sabbath, oh crap, they would have stoned me to death, for sure....by the word of our "loving creator." The men who wrote this nonsense would be in a cell next to Charles Manson today. There were laugh out loud moments.
Ebling serves the great good service of rendering this book's contents into plain, simple language - to the extent of ridicule - coupled with reference to the countless contradictions, meaningless or ridiculous directives - born of primitive minds and the sheer nonsensical account of the origin of life and other commentary upon human existence. All those professing belief in the Christian or Judaic religions should read this book. While faith doesn't require proof, some will at least reconsider their beliefs and faith in the religion with which they have been indoctrinated.I was both entertained and informed by the book.
Haaahaaaahaaaaaaa! A real LOL-fest here. The author does a helluva job pointing out all the absurdities & inconsistanties in "the book." How anyone can accept the bible as a literal "word of god" is beyond me, especially after reading Ebling's hysterically funny book. Sure, it's totally irreverant, but if a "god" did actually exist, I doubt he (or she) would be such a jealous, violent, racist, homophobic, misogynist, JERK!
Good read - funny if taken as a sitcom or Monty Python skit. Brings many of the fabled stories into a clearer light as to how one could possibly think that these ancient texts are to be taken literally as truth. Should turn the story line into a Politically Incorrect mini-series on HBO. A bit X-rated, but then again, so isn't the original source?
Amazon was very quick to deliver this book, and I cannot put it down! I know enough about the bible to know that although it's funny as hell, (see what I did there?) it's also pretty damn accurate. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to know what this silly book has to say but also enjoys a good laugh at the same time.
