*Starred Review* Really? An etiquette book for teens? Yes, really, you butt-faced jerk! See, that right there is “dickish behavior,†a timeless plague for which Doherty has a cabinet full of cures. The atmosphere is pure Dick-and-Jane: fussy early-reader prose married to bland clip-art-style illustrations starring a deadpan boy and girl. Through these oldfangled characters, Doherty fires absurd twenty-first-century zingers that happen to be really, really, really funny. (When was the last time you LOL’d at a nonfiction book?) Droll humor is one thing, but does Doherty deliver substance? Shockingly, she does, offering teens blunt, no-nonsense advice on the adult world that awaits them. Examples: don’t stare at a female's boobs during conversation, avoid passive-aggressive Post-its, try to smell like “nothing in particular†if you work in the service industry, don’t recline your airplane chair all the way, and on and on. She even drops some mega-wisdom bombs; regarding faith, she writes, “Believing in an idea is kind of like falling in love with a person—it just seems right, even if we can’t explain it.†Given the emphasis on roommates, office parties, and alcohol, this is clearly the gift book for next year’s high-school and college grads. After all, we all need the occasional reminder that peeing in the shower is wrong. Grades 10-12. --Daniel Kraus

It's not so much a parenting book, per se - no, it really is an etiquette book. But the tone and language used is straightforward and speaks to teens and young adults in a manner that they understand. And all that stuff you learned in parenting class? It's back, and much more applicable than you thought. . . . The book is rated for 18+, but honest to God, I'll let my 12-year-old daughter read it. There's nothing inappropriate in terms of language or subject matter, I think, for middle schoolers, and frankly, that's where the seeds of dickishness are usually planted." - Chicago Now

I bought this for my brother, who is currently a dick.It was less of a joke book than I expected... but that is probably a good thing since my brother could certainly use some real, practical advice on how to be a decent human.I would buy it again... should the need arise.
My son actually read this book. Just the perfect amount of snark and inappropriateness to get a 12 year old to read an etiquette book. Now we enjoy flushing with the toilet lid closed and other treasures.
Well this is a funny title, one of which I didn't believe existed and for that reason alone I purchased as a gag gift to my spouse. lol. As far as the contents - entertaining, but I was surprised how much content involved school as if they were speaking to an audience in high school or younger, but overall - the fact my spouse unwrapped this gift - and the look on his face was worth every penny!
I bought this book for my nephew's 18th birthday in hopes of curing his "D-ness".He's still a D, but he is a little more polite about it. So I'll consider that a win!I would certainly suggest pairing this book with "How Not to Be an A-Hole". I'll also be the first to get in line for "How Not to Be a Dipshat" should it ever be printed. The author really gets it when putting herself in the shoes of a bonafide D. She uses helpful language and suggestions on how to stop being a D without coming off as a condescending D herself. Meghan Doherty has mastered the art and I suggest this book as a gift for that special D in your life.
love this book gave it to my husband!!!! hope he learns from it
This should be required reading for all middle schoolers (and plenty of people older than that!). We can all be mindful of the ways in which we may be jerks without realizing it. It's funny and snarky enough to not be preachy, but actually addresses how to navigate real social situations, including online.
My 17 year old has been reading it and talking about it. He just liked carrying it around at first to harass his friends, but he's actually getting something out of it!
Good gift for that family member who needs a reminder
