Martin Grams, Jr. scores again !Amazing depth and details behind The Shadow, with special emphasis upon the radio series, while supplying fascinating insights on the other iterations in print and on the screen.Minutia: I was particularly impressed with some of the reprinted local radio station sponsor advertisements --one from my own town! This has none of the flaws that Grams` 2000 'The Have Gun-Will Travel Companion' suffered from ( and The Shadow book has a hardcover release...which I still would like to see for the 'Have Gun Companion')If you are a fan of The Shadow--Trust me; Buy This Book !

You will LOVE this book!As the title says, this is mostly about the radio show. It touches rather lightly on the Shadow in other media, which makes the reader hungry for further information. (See "The Shadow Knows" DVD or any book written or recommended by Will Murray.)A shame that the movie bombed, due to youngsters believing the Shadow was a Batman copy. Batman was a Shadow copy, which was freely admitted by Batman's creator and by Batman himself within the Batman comic books' continuity. Batman, however, was and is much more visible than his inspiration.

This book has an enormous amount of data on all the radio shows. Also look for the Green Hornet radio show book by the same author.

Very educational and informational

I have read a lot about the history of The Shadow, read the pulp novels, watched all of the movies/serial and I think this DVD captures most of all of the salient points in the history of the Shadow. It was too light on the subject of the Shadow's "Agents", but the insertion of video clips from relevant Shadow and associated actors', as well as the graphic components is well done.

This is a massive (800+ page) history of the popular radio suspense drama "The Shadow," and will be welcomed by any Old Time Radio fan. It shows the evidence of many hours of research into the show's creation and development, and into the cast and crew who made it come so vividly alive. Author Grams documents his sources carefully, allowing the reader to be the judge when he comes up against previously reported facts that cannot be validated. Detailed episode guides document as many episodes as possible, adding intriguing bits of trivia and behind-the-scenes detail in many entries. Rare illustrations are scattered throughout the text. For someone who already loves this classic radio show, Grams' book will be a tremendous gift; for others, it's liable to make them a convert.

I pre ordered this book a year ago and the longer I waited, the more people talked, the higher my expectations grew. I was not disappointed. It's so big and thick I fear I'll get carpal tunnel. If you are looking for a one-stop source that documents every aspect of the radio program and not just historical documentation, this is definitely the book. Besides the origin of the radio program, Orson Welles' involvement, salary contracts, co-op sponsorship, Charles Michelson's transcription syndication sales service, there's a wealth of information. There's even an appendix devoted to the South American version of the 1940s, the Australian version of the same decade (with cast lists and dates and times of recordings), and all of The Shadow's appearances on "QUICK AS A FLASH" with plot summaries and dates. I always thought there was four or five. Boy was I wrong. The Shadow appeared on the quiz program in what appears to be 50 times! There are humorous (and true) stories of how the radio program influenced juveniles into a life of crime, how the program was influenced by the events of World War II, and details about the Goodrich transcriptions versus the Blue Coal transcriptions. My favorite chapter has to be Chapter Seven devoted to "Character Studies." Seems the author jotted down notes to everything pertaining to Commissioner Weston, Shreve, Lamont Cranston, Margot Lane and others. Who smoked, where the stories generally took place (not Chicago!), names of their pets, chauffeur, butler, the college they went to, you get the idea.Until I read this book (so large I'm still reading it) I did not know that Margot Lane was spelled with a silent 't' in all the radio scripts. In the pulps, she is spelled Margo. Shreve's name is spelled two different ways, depending on which radio scripts you consult. Jack Benny wanted to do a skit spoofing The Shadow (he did in 1932 and 1933, but this was years later) and for legal reasons could not. They did a skit on The Whistler instead. A Shadow script was rejected by the sponsor but later broadcast (with names of characters changed) on "CASEY CRIME PHOTOGRAPHER" and it seems a recording of that CASEY episode does exist! An edited copy of "The Flight of the Vulture" from 1939 has been circulating in collector hands and the author states the uncut version is also available and points out the differences so you can tell whether or not you have the edited version. The Shadow was NOT the host of the "LOVE STORY MAGAZINE HOUR" (I always thought that was weird every time I read that). Seems that myth is now debunked. The author obviously did his research. He debunks myths that have been in print for decades. Kenny Delmar did not play the role of The Shadow when Orson Welles was unable to make it to the studio. Nigel Bruce did not play a role in a Shadow episode. Grayson Maynard Enlow and John Kurtz did not play the role either, even though they have been credited. There are a lot of footnotes in this book, pointing out errors that have (apparently) been reprinted from one book to another. And I do mean there are a lot of them. The author pointed out the source of those errors and the source for the corrected information. Thank goodness. Now at least I know that Dunning, Tollin and others were inaccurate and there's a book I can consult without having to question what I read elsewhere. Now the only complaint I have. The page that ends each chapter is centered, rather than printed from the top margin. This is no fault against the publishers or the author. It's an obvious printing error and the printers are at fault. It looked odd at first but it's second nature to me now. But I have to five five stars on this one simply because it's a wealth of information and it exceeded my expectation. Now if the author can do a book about "THE WHISTLER" in the same manner, I'll be very happy.
