I'm a fan of the Weelicious blog and decided to purchase the cookbook. There are some excellent recipes here that I rely on heavily when cooking for my toddler. I can't remember if these recipes came from her blog or her book (or both), but the sweet potatoes with lime and maple syrup, cottage cheese pancakes, stuffed French toast, (sweet pea risotto - blog only) to name a few - are huge hits with my family. My goal is to try a couple new recipes a week. I am so grateful for Catherine's blog and now, book. I have found that figuring out what to feed my little one (beyond the same old peanut butter and jelly toast) has been overwhelming, frustrating, even stressful, at times. (There is so much pressure to be a perfect mother.) I appreciate the easy, encouraging, helpful tone of the book and blog. This is starting to sound cheesy, but it really has empowered me as a new mom to see that I can cook a fresh and healthy meal for my daughter without feeling burned out and exhausted. Catherine makes it attainable, without the guilt if you take a shortcut. (Catherine, if you are reading this, thank you so much.)I do have an observation that a previous reviewer mentioned as well: there are less recipes for the in-between toddler who has moved on from purées but is not quite ready to chomp down on thicker slices of meat, thick panini bread, etc. Every child is different, but from 13 months to now (18 months and counting), I have had to pass over numerous recipes that look delicious but won't work from my daughter right now. She is particular about texture and still likes her foods to be easy to chomp on. A number of the meat dishes, sandwiches, etc., that would involve a lot of chewing probably won't work. I am looking forward to being able to try more dishes as she gets older and becomes a "more determined chewer." There are still great recipes that will work for us, but I wish there were more for this stage. I do think this cookbook will be used for a long time, as the non-purée recipes are meant to be eaten by the whole family.Overall, it is a great book and blog!
I've never read a cookbook that alienates its readers in the first two sentences. The first two sentences are, "If you bought this book or are flipping through it tin the bookstore, chances are you're in need of help. For countless moms like us, the task of cooking for our families can feel like a hopeless exercise..." As a Dad who loves to cook for his twin toddlers and was just looking for some additional ideas, it struck me as odd that the author assumes her readers are "in need of help" and must all be moms.Fortunately I kept reading and tried lots of the recipes. I think many of the recipes strike a very good balance of being at least moderately easy, moderately tasty, and moderately healthy.I agree with some other reviewers that there are too many model shots and not enough photos of the food. I also think some of the writing over hypes how amazing the recipes are. But nonetheless we got some nice solid recipes from it, so I think that warrants 4 stars.
Hmm. I felt like a had to filter through a lot of the recipes because they were not truly healthy. They are probably all healthier than eating fast food or processed foods but they rely heavily on meat and dairy which we are trying to minimize in our diet (we are not vegan). I just do not think tons of cheese is healthy. So if you are lactose intolerant, vegan, or dairy free, this is probably not the cookbook for you. Very nice pictures though.
This is one of a small number of cookbooks I own that I actually use regularly. Everything I've made has been good, and many dishes have been excellent. I find her recipes to generally be simple in ingredients and prep time, which makes the good results even more impressive. If you keep a well stocked pantry, you will be able to make most of the items in this cookbook without first running to the grocery store. I have frequently recommended this book to other moms, and I have given it as a gift several times as well. I believe in cooking from scratch, using unprocessed foods, and I aim to have a healthy balanced dinner on the table for my family every night. This book helps me achieve that goal. I also recommend her other book about school lunches. 5 stars!
My wife and I have been on a mission to find a cookbook that is truly about cooking for children, not just dumbing down a bunch of recipes so that kid's will eat them. Weelicious is amazing in this regard. There are so many recipes that we would have never even though of being for children that are laid out in this book.... and our kid loves them. Sure, not everything is an immediate hit with our 3 year old, but the presentation of the recipe and the ingredients used almost always encourage our child to at least try them. Our son has eaten things he never has before from beats to spinach, all without a complaint. My wife and I, as the big kids of the house, have also quite enjoyed the recipes.I would also recommend signing up for the Weelicious email newsletter to get more tips and recipes on a regular basis.
I stumbled onto the Weelicious blog when looking for toddler recipes and though I find the name a little annoying, I really like Catherine McCord's philosophy and cooking style. She keeps things simple and flavorful, while promoting a variety of foods, natural ingredients and healthy eating. The "Weelicious" cookbook has become a staple in my house and any time I make a really good dinner my husband looks at me and asks, "Weelicious?" My mom even ordered a copy so she could make kid-friendly meals for all the grandkids. I've given two copies as gifts and so far it has been a hit with everyone. Now I'm just desperately awaiting the release of her "Weelicious Lunches" book!!Highly recommend to anyone, especially moms who want to make homemade, healthy meals that don't require a ton of time!
