About the Author
Jeremy Black, Professor of History at Exeter University, graduated from Cambridge University with a Starred First and did graduate work at Oxford University before teaching at the University of Durham, and from 1996 at Exeter.His two major fields of scholarship are military history and the history of cartography, and this book, like its companion volume, Maps of War, brings them together. Other recent books include Air Power, The Cold War, Holocaust: History and Memory, and Metropolis.He has held visiting chairs at a number of American institutions including West Point and received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize from the Society of Military History in 2008.

I counted 40 maps in the first 25% of the book (and I’m still reading it). They’re in color (some are simply beautiful works of art in their own right) and most are in good detail. Some maps have enlarged sections for a more detailed examination. All maps illustrations are heavily commented in their captions. The writing is adequate, though not inspiring. I think maybe the ‘youth’ of the other reviewer prevents them from recognizing ‘old’ nautical maps? Plus, you can ‘map’ things out in words too. It’s colorful enough to make a good ‘coffee table’ book even.
So, this book contents more history than maps. Interesting but not brilliant overview from the early days to present (2017)
