Grade 6-9 - Essentially a graphic novel without the graphics, this book (the first of five) should have broad appeal to readers who love computer games and Japanese anime. As the story begins, five orphans, being raised as foster brothers and Buddhist monks in 17th-century China, are hiding in a large water jar as imperial forces, led by their renegade older brother, Ying, attack and slaughter their temple's residents. Grandmaster has given the boys animal names and has trained each of them in a martial-arts style related to his titular animal's strengths. He intends the five to escape, even if everyone else dies. Fu - the "tiger" - is this book's main character; in addition to remaining free, he is determined to reclaim the valuable ancient training scrolls that Ying has taken from the temple. Fu finds friends in unexpected places and learns to control the impulses he has fought against all of his life. Teens are likely to warm to the implicit theme that each person has a particular destiny, an inborn sense of identity that must be brought to light. While quite a page-turner, employing slapstick humor from time to time in true manga style, Tiger is nonetheless an adventure story and not a more serious work of finding one's self and one's place in the world. Gr. 6-9. This first installment of The Ancestors series features Fu, or Tiger, one of five orphan monks, each named for an animal he most resembles. As the book begins, the boys are hidden in a water barrel during a raid on their temple. The emperor's army, under the command of their former brother, Ying, the Eagle, is out to destroy the Cangzhen Monastery, kill the grandmaster, and steal the sacred scrolls. Impetuous Fu rescues the scrolls, but his own rash act leads to imprisonment in a remote village. Although set in 1650 China, this is a kung fu novel, not historical fiction, and despite the grandmaster's peace-seeking Buddhist philosophy, Tiger is not for the squeamish, as Ying is a terrifying villain and "bloodstained flesh dangles" during violent battles. Characters are virtuous or evil, but the slam-bang, pedal-to-the-metal adventure stands a good chance of luring kids away from video games; they will definitely line up for the forthcoming sequel. Tiger is the 1st book in The Five Ancestors Book. Fu, is Cantonese for Tiger. Fu has been trained by the Grandmaster in the art of Tiger Kung Fu fighting. He has been raised with other orphaned boys in a Temple and each is taught a style of kung fu. The Temple is attacked by a former student, Ying, who hates the Grandmaster and kills everyone in the Temple except his former five brother.Tiger is the adventures of Fu after escaping.As a school librarian, I see this series as being particularly interesting to my boys. I am sure that girls will also like it, but am always on the lookout for books that will grab the interest of some of my reluctant readers.Lots of action, kung fu fighting make the books almost seem like you are involved in a computer game which will attract the interest of students.Great addition to the library.
The books arrived in great condition. The cover illustrations are very nice.I would recommend this book to a kid ages 9-12, especially if they like action and adventure. Reading this book first helps give an idea of the history and background of the characters. The events in the subsequent books (Monkey, Snake, Crane) are interwoven. The events and stories in the first four books weave together to help provide background information. Starting from book five (Eagle, Mouse, Dragon), the story moves on quickly and the events follow more of a sequence. Some of the violence may be a bit graphic for the younger readers.My daughters love these stories. We read the books together. They like learning about the bond and loyalty of the characters. They ask about how the characters grow and change throughout the stories. The stories also stoked their interest in learning about the Chinese language, history, and culture. I like how these stories remind me of the martial arts sagas broadcasted over the local radio station during my childhood.
Very action oriented book! Lots of Kung Fu, a little bit of blood and gore, bit of fantasy (animals behaving in sympathy with humans) a litte (not too accurate) culture thrown in, definitely some mystery and good vs. evil. My 10 year old read it and REALLY loved it...he can't wait for the next book to come out. Consider that very sensitive children might be bothered by multiple deaths and violence. Resistent readers may be inspired by this book with very appealing characters and a clear sense of conflict re: obeying, thinking for oneself, appropriate use of violence.
I would recommend this book especially for boys 8 years and older. I enjoyed the book because it has different types of Kung Fu martial arts and lots of action. The plot has good versus the evil empire trying to acquire the Dragon Scrolls from Cangzhen Temple. The 5 brother characters are based on fierce animal types of Kung Fu techniques. One brother called Ying turned evil and stole the scrolls and was leading the Emperor's army. The other brothers are trying to get the scrolls back and make Ying good again.I enjoyed this book even though it was a bit long with 196 pages. If you like history, action and evil plots then I think you will like this book.
I am NOT reviewing this on the story, just the age range. The reviews suggested it was for grades 5-9, but the book is clearly for younger kids. I'd put it at grades 3-7. I originally purchased it for my 14yo grandson, but I will give it to the 9yo instead.
I received this item very quickly. It is a very fast-paced book, and I actually finished it the same day! The main character, Fu, is as agressive and temperamental as the animal he was named after. The story explains the situation of all the monks as they attempt to find their true origins, and learn the truth. Fans of anime and admirors of martial arts will enjoy the writing style of Mr. Stone. This book was fun, and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series, the Monkey!
its a good book
I bought TIGER for my eight-year-old son, and he absolutely loved it. So far, his reading tastes have included the Bionicle books, Lemony Snicket's novels, Magic Tree House adventures, and the old Boxcar Children series, but in the Five Ancestors, he's found a new favorite. This was the first book my son read from cover to cover, on his own, in the space of eight hours. He was so absorbed in reading TIGER that he barely wanted to stop for food or bathroom breaks. We're so excited to have discovered Jeff Stone!
