MURDER IN THE CITY, Willfried Kaute (TLD): The crime-scene photographs featured in this grisly collection were discovered during a renovation of the former NYPD headquarters. As filmmaker and author Kaute explains, the images were intended as purely objective documentation of crimes and offer little to no personal identification of the victims. The photographs show the slain lying supine on sidewalks or in the stairwells and bedrooms of cramped tenement buildings, their faces and wounds unobscured. The causes of death are at times specified and stem from such causes as domestic disputes, gang-related entanglements, and personal grievances. Despite the explicit violence of the photographs, they also contain a haunting intimacy: the dead are often surrounded by the trappings of their home lives, such as pictures on the walls and cherished personal trinkets. Essays by Kaute and German writer Joe Bausch contextualize the early use of crime-scene photography, while excerpted newspaper accounts elaborate on and sometimes sensationalize the various crimes. Wilfried Kaute, born in Duisburg, Germany, in 1948, works as a cameraman, film producer, and author in Cologne. His projects include many award-winning films and TV productions. Murder in the City: New York, 1910-1920 is his first book. Joe Bausch, born Hermann-Josef Bausch-Hölterhoff in Ellar, West Germany, in 1953, is an actor, known for Tatort, Tattoo, and Paradise Mall.

This book has much more than just crime scene photography. It also includes stories and lots of fantastic turn of the century photos of New York City. I highly recommend it if this is a topic that interests you.
Great coffee table book. Obviously not great for small children or the weak of heart, but there are plenty of photos of old New York City that truly captures the imagination and helps immerse the reader into the setting. The crime scene photos are more like art than blood and gore. There is a story in each photo and I found myself fascinated with the entire photo, not just the victim. This is an excellent glimpse into 1920's NYC as well as early crime scene investigation.
The photos were fascinating and the ones that provided a bit of a back story were most interesting. It would have been a bit better if more photos had more background attached to them instead of just a smattering of them with more detail.
Do you like photos of dead bodies? If you do then you will love this book.

You get exactly what it says. Murder scene photography. You're an idiot if you think it's anything more. People whose line of work is dealing with murder or criminal psychologist (like myself) find these things fascinating. You don't have to be a necrophiliac to have a curiousity in the dead and their history.
