When Weakland resigned as Milwaukee archbishop in 2002 after revelations of a past homosexual relationship and a confidential payout, it was seen as another stunning episode in the unfolding clergy abuse scandal. It was especially painful to liberal Catholics who viewed Weakland as their champion. Weakland was publicly penitent, but other events that year—chief among them the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law in Boston—made Weakland's drama a footnote. With this frank and well-told memoir, that's no longer the case. A Benedictine monk, Weakland is up front about his homosexuality in a church that preferred to ignore gays, and about his failures in overseeing pedophile priests. But this is really the poignant journey of a soul, not a mea culpa about sex, with chapters on his hardscrabble boyhood and fascinating, and sometimes sobering, insights into the life of a bishop and the tensions between the American Catholic Church and the Vatican. At points the narrative has more than enough detail on the life of a globe-trotting abbot. But overall this is an invaluable historical record and a moving personal confession. As a fellow liturgical musician I have always had a warm spot in my heart for Weakland; a music degree from Julliard is an honor. On the main biography, my opinion was that he gave a good account of his upbringing and church career. In a few sections it became a little dry (e.g. as he related his visits to different Benedictine houses) buthe kept this material concise .. and noted parenthetically that "yes, some of this may be tedious!"I was particularly taken by the many situations of misunderstandings and conflicts with the Church hierarchy.I found myself torn between two sentiments --- first, sympathetic; as a Catholic who has struggled with a number of the Church's shortcomings (includingparticipation in lay reform organizations), it was good to see that some even at the Archbishop level wereworking toward those same goals...-- second, frustrated; thinking that if an Archbishop has so little actual influence in solving these problemshow will an individual lay Catholic accomplish anything! Many know that sadly, Weakland resigned in disgrace after a quiet settlement to a purported gay contactbecame public.I have not followed the details of his case in other sources so I am taking his account at face value; perhapsthere is "more to the story" but it is unfortunate that this incident brought him down. In any case given theegregious incidents that other bishops have been involved with, it seems likely that he would have beenkept on had he not run afoul of Vatican conservatives.I would recommend this to anyone interested in the real operation of the Church hierarchy over the time ofWeakland's life - Vatican II to the 2000's.
My reading of the autobiography of Rembert Weakland is a greater pleasure than I anticipated. It is a reminder that human beings have a greater complexity than the usual publicity about them allows. Weakland has held several key positions of leadership - among them the Abbot General of the Benedictine Order allowing a close proximity to Pope Paul VI (an unsung hero of the theology of social justice and of considerable humility of character that is MISSED!). His episcopacy was marked by a Montini-like care for the common good and by a prescient sense of what the church needs - i.e., a greater participation by laity, women not least among them, in the decision-making and pastoral/priestly labor of the church, along with a greater accountability to the church at large and to the society it lives in.Weakland's own great mistakes, his flounderings are the church's as well. Coming to grips with his own sexuality is a leit-motif of this book - the context for which is his reflecting back from his resignation as Archbishop of Milwaukee in light of a relationship from 22 years earlier when he was younger to that office. Despite - maybe because of - the evident scandal that accompanied his departure from Milwaukee, there is something winning about his candor, even though its rhythm is slow and gradual. he is confessing on behalf of the whole church - acknowledging what Eugene Kennedy has called the church's "unhealed wound," its reckoning with human sexuality, by working with his own wounds. Confession is good for the soul, yes, but this confession is also one of faith in the love of God, in Her overwhelming tenderness - its being manifest in one life is a sign of God's intention toward all lives.
Filled my expectations
Retired and much maligned (by the Vatican) Archbishop Rembert Weakland's biographical book is his apologia pro vita sua. The book reveals some of the in-fighting, back stabbing and hidden intrigues of the Vatican Curia in place during the pontificates of Popes Paul VI and John Paul II that are still continuing today under Pope Benedict XVI.Weakland had a weakness for which he dearly paid but he had enemies in the Vatican who wanted to create an image of a damaged bishop just at the point of his retirement. Archbishop Timothy Dolan (now Cardinal Dolan of New York) finished the Vatican handiwork when he was appointed Archbishop of Milwaukee to replace Weakland.
There is a great rush, by some, to add the title great to the late John Paul II. History has a way of giving us perspective and perhaps we should wait until a full picture emerges. Archbishop Weakland, like the great men of history, struggled with his life and his spirituality. In this candid accounting of his own journey, he gives us a personal insight into the workings of the Vatican under John Paul II. His reflections and insight can be a starting point for better understanding our own journey of faith.
What an amazing life! What an important part of Church History he is!From simple beginnings to the highest offices of the Roman Catholic Church, this wonderful man is neither saint nor sinner, but rather a sincere and human pilgrim making his journey toward god. He falls and he gets up again. He learns and develops and uses his experiences and hard earned wisdom to do good and improve his world. He writes beautifully and one is captivated by his story. While I believe that anyone who enjoys autobiographies will enjoy this work as well; I think it might be of extra interest to musicians, religious and clergy persons (and especially gay religious and clergy persons or their friends/families), and Catholics trying to get a grip on what has been happening to the Church.Blessings on you all.
This book gives a fresh look at what it means to be comitted to the message of Jesus. It is filled with honest and frank discussion of Archbishop Weaklands journey of faith and his failings as a human person searching for Christ. He truely cares for the people in the pew and their daily struggles to live lives that are part of a faith journey. Many Thanks to a faithful Sheppard for his honest and open message of his life and the hope it reveals.
