Disclaimer: I was given this product free to try with the understanding that I would write an honest review of it. My review has not been biased.First off, this book was a lot thinner than I expected. That's a good thing - don't misunderstand me. The problem I've had in the past with other books for the MAT is that they try to cover every conceivable possibility. This makes them huge, unwieldy, and I find that I stress about trying to learn/remember everything in them that I either give up, or I just barely skim over the information. It's too much.I appreciate the size because the authors are very concise. There is one page about test-taking tips. They don't explain, they don't go into detail, they just make 20 well thought-out suggestions about how to test better. They then explain what the test is and take one page to explain what an analogy is. Four pages are dedicated to helping you understand relationships between words and how to be successful on those types of questions. They give question samples and explanations. They break relationships down into only three categories: Association, Inclusion, and Meaning.Eight pages are spent on Strategies. They explain different strategies and give examples to help you work through them. Some of the strategies are common sense to some of us: Eliminate answers, use logic, read carefully. Others are strategies I have only seen in this book: Trap of familiarity, face value, use jujitsu (I won't go into detail about how you use jujitsu on this exam - you'll have to buy the book and find out!)There's one page of final notes that just summarize the most important things, like not panicking and making sure you're using your time wisely (you don't want to run out!!)The section you're waiting for is next. There are 2 120-question practice tests. They try to mimic the real test as best as possible. You know how these testing companies don't give out much about their tests, so it's difficult to make practice tests or study guides. This is why I've been frustrated because the practice tests I've found in the past were nothing like the real test... or that the study guides covered far, far too much to ever be useful for anything other than burning me out. This study guide comes as close to the real test as possible. The best part is that there is an explanation for each and every one of the 240 questions.This all covers only 50 pages of the 88 page book. We should be done by now, right? Wrong.Included in the pages past your practice tests is a bunch of useful information.-How to Pay For Graduate School-Analyzing Potential Scholarships/Fellowships-Explanation of MAT scores and admissions by major-5 Secret Keys for Success (you'll have to buy the book to see them!)They try to correlate your score to your IQ - which is helpful, because this is one of the tests that MENSA will take for admission if your score is high enough.How do you overcome test anxiety? They give you 9 pages of tips, tricks, and ways to prepare yourself and overcome anxiety.Are you terrible of math? Does it make you not want to take the test? How about 8 pages of math tips, tricks, and ideas? If one doesn't work for you, there's several more to try.They also offer some bonus material at the end (because all of the extra stuff just wasn't enough).Overall, I give the book 5 stars. Yes, it gives you tips, tricks, practice tests, and everything else that you expect. The test and explanations are concise and brief to keep from overwhelming you. But the book also helps you use and interpret your score - whether you want to use it for grad school admission or entrance into MENSA. It also helps you decide how to pay for school, how to overcome test anxiety and how to improve your math skills. I've never seen a study guide include all of those things.Seriously, this is the best resource I've been able to find.Don't be fooled by how thin the book appears to its competitors. This book packs a huge punch that is immensely more useful and helpful on the test than the others were.
Using study guides can be very helpful and some professors even hand them out and allow students to fill them in with various things they have learned in the class. When it came to this test, I was given no study guide, but I still wanted one to use in order to get through the material. I thought I might have to make one and I was willing to do that, but I knew that would take a lot of time. I looked online to see if I could find some sort of outline or something I could use as a starting point. When I used this study guide, I had hope. It was for the very miller analogies test I was going to take and I thought it might prove helpful. Boy did I underestimate this study guide! It was way more than just helpful. The guide claimed to be effective and comprehensive and that’s exactly what it was, though I wish I could think of words even larger than those to say that same thing. The guide had everything in it that I needed to learn in order to do well on the test. I didn’t have to go back and fill anything in at all. There were NO blanks! I was glad to have all the material in one place and I took notes as I went, highlighting areas that I needed to study harder. The guide was cheap and it was well worth the money. Now that I know what I got, I would have paid a lot more for it, that’s for sure.
I love the MAT study cards because they are easy, light and I can take them with me anywhere.I study everywhere I go without wasting precious time. I would give the study cards and the book review a 5 star...due to the easy to remember tips from your experts. Thank you! I love studying the MAT review book written by experts. It is easy to follow and I have learned a lot. Thank you for providing this book for people who have been out of school for a long time!!
I purchased the MAT Secrets Study Guide back in July but, unfortunately, am just getting the time to begin studying. I have only gotten through the explanations of the questions and what to look for and how to go about solving each different type of question and find it so much more helpful that other avenues I've tried. I have skimmed through a bit and appreciate that there are so many practice test as well. I am optimistic about what I will learn as well as what I will score on the actual test and look forward to using this tool.Â
It is a waste of money. It has only 2 practice tests with childish advice as secrets! such as sleep well or eat well before you take the test. it also advise you on graduate schools and financial aid. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. I did not have a stellar undergraduate GPA; therefore, it was critical that I score well on my graduate school entrance exam. I knew I was capable of doing well in graduate school; I simply did not apply myself in my Bachelor'sprogram. My graduate school advisor recommended that I take the MAT rather than the GRE, so I purchased "MAT Secrets" because of the money-back guarantee. Boy did I make the right choice. I read the study guide thoroughly and took the MAT only once. I scored a 93! What a great resource! It was worth every penny.
Recently I have purchased the Miller Analogies Study Guide. I have begun to review yet. It is very insightful. I am beginning to understand the types of question being asked and how to respond. I like how the book provides authentic questions, the answers, and the explanation for the answer. I know how to break up the statements. However, I have to still work on building the vocabulary that is used.
