About the Author
Vikki Haffenden, coauthor of The Knitting Book (with Frederica Patmore), is a professional knitted textiles designer with a background in commercial knitwear design. She teaches at the University of Brighton, and her work has been featured in Woolcraft, The Cool Girl's Guide to Knitting, and The Cool Girl's Guide to Crochet. Vikki acted as a design consultant to develop Rooster hand-knit yarns and Rooster Pattern Book One. This book doesn't know what it wants to be. It thinks it's a beginner's book, it also thinks it's a reference book, and it contains some "patterns" (which I'll talk about later).But it doesn't do any of those things well.For a beginner's book, it contains too much information that beginners never need. It teaches you knit, and purl, and cast-ons, and then proceeds to teach you tons and tons of different cast-ons before it goes into cast-offs. It doesn't teach you a general progression of skills. For a beginner, it's downright overwhelming.Yet for a reference book, all the techniques are quickly rushed over and never explained very well. In fact, I know how to do quite a few of the cast-ons and various other techniques, but I could not make sense of it in this book. The diagrams are utterly confusing.As for patterns, the samples are knit in rather unattractive, ugly colors. The choice of construction is strange. The hat was done flat and then seamed, which is weird and unnecessary (it's not intarsia or anything), especially as the book teaches (or quickly rushes over) knitting in the round.I bought this book when I was just learning to knit, and I wish I had not. For each of those things, there are tons of other books out there that specialize in those categories and do them exceedingly well. Don't waste your money.I have a lot of knitting books, and I would recommend Stitch 'n Bitch Knitter's Handbook for a real beginner, and after that, either Stitch 'n Bitch Superstar Knitting, or Kate Atherley's Beyond Knit and Purl. All of those books take you through a natural progression of techniques.
I am a beginner to intermediate knitter. I wanted to knit a name on a hat. This book showed me how in simple easy to understand directions. Do glad I found this read.

For a beginner, I found the book a bit overwhelming. The illustrations are excellent and easy to follow. Perhaps as one gets more proficient the book could be more useful
