Review

"Morris does an admirable job of capturing the agony and the ecstasy of those turbulent times...a thoroughly engaging history." ―The Wall Street Journal"Morris’s expert guided tour of cardiac surgery and its quirky, brilliant innovators covers a dazzling and dizzying array of procedures and hints at tantalizing prospects for future surprises." ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Because of that rich cast of characters, “The Matter of the Heart” is more than a litany of medical advances―it's the story of the gritty, bloody and deadly experiences that underlie scientific progress." ―The Washington Post"A fascinating history." ―Booklist"This is a book of learned asides and extensive trivia, but it's always enfolded in a well-developed narrative with no end of heroes...and no end of technical problems to overcome. Just the thing for aspiring heart surgeons, who may one day soon be 3-D printing new hearts that will be 'dispatched in drones to wherever they are needed.'" ―Kirkus Reviews"Thrilling ... Significant and often immersive… The “dizzying” story of heart surgery is every bit as important as that of the nuclear, computer or rocket ages. And now it has been given the history it deserves." ―James McConnachie, The Sunday Times"The research that has gone into this book is simply staggering, and Morris has achieved much more than a history of heart operations… It is a study of human beings driven by Olympian ambition and bottomless curiosity. It is, in the end, a book about wonder. And a wonderful book." ―Frances Wilson, The Daily Telegraph"Gripping... The Matter of the Heart details the breathtaking advances that have been made in the past 100 years." ―John Crace, The Guardian"Thomas Morris has written not a history of medical ideas about the heart, but a history of heart surgery... The stories come quickly: fluent, wry, admiring... Morris has made something unique: a history less of people than of procedures, but lively, enthusiastic and brimming with detail ... anything but boring" ―Gavin Frances, The New Statesman“Fascinating and compelling... There are also remarkable tales of survival against the odds, perseverance, ingenuity and awe-inspiring feats...Morris deftly constructs an engaging narrative” ―Manjit Kumar, Literary Review“With the cut and thrust of cardiac surgery now demystified, we forget that venturing into the thoracic cavity once seemed as daunting as polar exploration. Or more so: as Thomas Morris reveals in this stirring chronicle, even touching a beating heart was long viewed as impossible… Told through 11 pivotal operations, it’s a tale of ingenuity... It’s rich, too, in alarming details ― not least, the injections of strychnine and whisky that featured in early surgery” ―Barbara Kiser, Nature“Thomas Morris does for the history of cardiac surgery what The Right Stuff and Hidden Figures did for the space race... The book is - appropriately - pulse-thumpingly gripping and will be enjoyed by anyone who, in any sense of the phrase, has a heart” ―Mark Lawson“Tremendous. An exhilarating sweep through ancient history and contemporary practice in surgery of the heart. It’s rich in extraordinary detail and stories that will amaze you. A wonderful book” ―Melvyn Bragg“[Thomas Morris] succeeds where many such experts have failed in distilling the complexity of this organ into a highly readable and fascinating narrative… in 350 easy-to-read pages ... [he] captur[es] the majesty and pace of more than 80 years of scientific innovation ... the degree to which this book has been researched is breathtaking” ―David Warriner, Independent Nurse“Standing outside this precious and pressured world, Morris provides an even-handed and honest survey of the pioneers and their breakthroughs…intelligent” ―Wendy Moore, The Times“Magnificent… Thomas Morris provides us with a thoughtful, engaging and rigorous account of how cardiac surgeons through history have sought to undo the ravages wrought on the heart… The results are a triumph of both the human imagination, emotional resilience and supreme self-confidence… It is peppered with vibrant anecdotes as well as biographical accounts of the individuals who made these important contributions” ―Adrian Woolfson, Spectator“Morris’s book is where readers should go for riveting historical accounts of surgical brilliance” ―Joanna Bourke, Prospect

I have had heart surgery 4 times (yes ,you read correctly..4) and therefore it is a subject that is (pardon the pun) near and dear to my heart. I know, in many ways, way more than I ever wanted to know and way less than I should have known. This book offered me insights I had not previously been knowledgably about. The book begins with the first surgery to truly cut into the heart, during World War II in order to remove shrapnel from a soldiers heart. From there is moves on to the correction of "blue baby" syndrome to transplantation, valve jobs, bypass surgery, and what the future holds for those with cardiac issues. The chapter begin with a description of the surgery followed by the history of the development of the surgical technique, many of which were truly daring and utterly amazing. The author follows the surgery from its idea and attempts in the laboratory (if you are an animal lover, you may find this a bit much…most of the procedures required dozens of practice runs on animals before attempts in humans) and on to what became the surgery. Each was groundbreaking at the time it was performed. The author also details the issues with making the desired equipment needed to complete such surgeries such as the heart lung bypass machine, the valves used in valve jobs and so on. And a lot of engineering was needed for each surgery to proceed. Finally, the author reviews the personalities involved with the surgeries. To be a heart surgeon requires a God complex and an ego that is huge. My first surgeries were performed by a team of 2 cardiac surgeons, but my last was done by a surgeon with several physician assistants. I asked why and he explained that there could only be one "God" in the operating theater at a time. The egos of the men that performed each surgery for the first time…well, you have to read to believe how huge the egos wereThis is a wonderful book, filled with detail, yet very readable. For anyone about to undergo heart surgery it might be comforting to know just how it is done, and how safe it is. For those of us who have already been under the knife, it is interesting to learn just what goes on while you are under. Highly recommend!.

A masterfully written gripping account of the history of cardiac surgery and its bold pioneers. One of the best books I have read.

Being the patient gives new perspective on the book. January 2005 was my quadruple bypass surgery following an angiogram in Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. I was fascinated during that procedure by being able to watch as the catheter placed its dye on the x-ray image. That resulted in the new surgical assessment "Oh, crap" stated by the doc as medical termology for >90% blockages at multiple places. Interestingly the total coleseterol measured at less than 110 and had been at that value for many years. He gave me a nice video of my blocked arteries and then introduced me to his buddy, the heart surgeon. My only symptom had been shortness of breath and a totally failed Tc-99 stress test scan.Seven hours later I felt better save for the knife fight that I seem to have lost. I don't even remember what bar I was in, but no more shortness of breath. This is a good book to read if you have had or will have any sort of heart repairs.

This is a very good review of the history of heart surgery. The writing keeps one moving from one topic to the other. It has been a very enjoyable and informative read.

Excelente historia de la cirugia cardiaca contada con gran información y en forma entretenidaMuy recomendable para profesionales del área de la salud cardiovascular

great book

I worked in open-heart surgery for 25 year and I learned so much from reading this book. Great historical perspective. Wish I would have come across this book sooner. Well written...good flow!

An excellent history of a fascinating subject. This is a book that is hard to put down. When I finished it, I wanted more. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in both the science and practice of medicine. This history is also well seasoned with accounts of many of the personalities involved.
